Trade & Economics Intern (Brasilia)

Main purpose of job:The British Embassy in Brasilia invites applications from students in at least their 3rd semester for the above part-time position. This is a challenging and rewarding position within the Trade & Economics team.The UK’s Brazil Network and Trade & Economics TeamThe UK’s Brazil Network includes the Embassy in Brasilia and consulates in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Recife and covers political, economic, climate, trade and commercial work. Teams across the Network work together to strengthen the UK and Brazil’s strategic relationship by deepening our trade ties, safeguarding our security, and tackling common climate and environmental challenges, as well as promoting our values, protecting human rights and democratic freedoms, and leveraging the UK’s position as a global hub for science and innovation.The Trade & Economics team works to promote and defend the UK’s global economic agenda. The team currently consists of a trade and economic policy team (based in Brasilia) and a financial services team (based in São Paulo), each working to deepen our bilateral relationship and pursue our mutual prosperity.This role is intended to provide support to the Trade and Economic Policy Team in all aspects of its work: analytical and policy support, as well as administrative support.Roles and responsibilities:

  • Provide support for analysis and report on significant macroeconomic, political and international trade issues in Brazil with a particular focus on research;
  • Gather qualitative and quantitative economic data and present it in written and graphic format;
  • Write regular economic reports about the main macroeconomic developments in Brazil;
  • Research and write about the latest developments on economic reform agenda.
  • Compile and update a reference database of key facts and figures about the Brazilian economy and trade.
  • Prepare and make regular and ad-hoc presentations about the Brazilian economy to key stakeholders in Brazil and in the UK;
  • Support the team’s multilateral policy agenda (especially focused on G20 and WTO);
  • Provide support on achieving UK’s wider economic, trade and political objectives in Brazil;
  • Update the team’s stakeholder map on a regular basis;
  • Schedule meetings, support organisation of visits and events, and liaise with key stakeholders (internal and external), including government departments.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Ongoing undergraduate studies in Economics or International Relations in at least the 3rd semester of study.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communications skills in both English and Portuguese.
  • Excellent written and computer skills, including with Excel (including both spreadsheet and graphical representation functions).
  • Excellent research skills.
  • Ability to carry out administrative tasks.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Portuguese.
  • Legal status to live and work in Brazil in your own right, from time of application.

Language requirements:Language: Portuguese and EnglishLevel of language required: Fluency in each, including the ability to write reports for senior audiences in English.Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Good understanding of the Brazilian economy and Brazil’s trade/economic agenda.
  • Confidence in conducting original trade/economic analysis.
  • Familiarity with public economic/trade databases.
  • Understanding of the role of multilateral structures (the WTO and G20 in particular).
